Sunland-Tujunga Neighborhood Council

Regular Meeting of 8/8/2001

The meeting was called to order at 7:06 p.m. by Joe Eiben. There were about 100 people in attendance. Nedd Brown led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Treasurerâs Report

Nedd Brown reported that we had income of about $100 from the Pride Fair at VHHS (2000) and water sales at the last meeting. The balance as of 8/8/01is $1182.52.

Minutes

The minutes of the July 11, 2001 meeting were approved as read.

Program

McGroarty Arts Center:Ê Laurelle Geils, Director of McGroarty Arts Center, gave a presentation on the history of the art center, the classes and services offered, and its current funding shortage. About $50,000 is needed to keep the center open. Membership is $20 for individuals, $50 or more to receive a personalized ceramic plaque at the center, and $1000 for patrons. The center will be holding a silent auction in November to raise money.

New Business

Jane Fanganielloâs resignation:Ê Brenda McAlpine read a prepared statement by Joe Eiben explaining the circumstances surrounding Janeâs resignation. Penny Blackwell moved that the Neighborhood Council reject the resignation. Seconded. Elaine Brown read a statement from Jane, who was out of town. Discussion followed. Joe Cohen moved to amend the motion to state that we vote by voice vote instead of by secret ballot. No second. The motion to reject the resignation passed, 51-3.

Tomi Lyn Bowling moved that the Neighborhood Council release $100 from the treasury to send flowers and a letter of appreciation to Jane upon her return from her trip. Seconded. Motion passed.

Invalid Vote:Ê Lloyd Hitt moved to support Bonners Rentalsâ move to the Central Towing property. Seconded. A ãstraw voteä was taken. Straw vote reflected unanimous support for the motion.

Mike Rubio moved to send letters to the Planning Commission reflecting our straw votes on Bonners and La Rocca Inspections. Seconded. Penny Blackwell moved to amend the motion to state that the letter be mailed once the Executive Committee determines that it is appropriate to do so. Seconded. Motion passed as amended.

Action Team Reports

Jazz in the Park:Ê Michael Gutierrez thanked Marioâs Sterling for the BBQ catering and the supply of the sodas. He thanked everyone who helped with the concert, including Joe DeCenzo, who made the stage look ãwonderful.ä Joe Eiben presented certificates of appreciation to Michael, Jeannine Carroll and Joe DeCenzo for their work on the concert.

Nedd Brown moved that the council reimburse Joe DeCenzo for staging materials. Seconded. Passed.

La Tuna Canyon:Ê Steve Crouch reported that the latest CAP newsletter is coming out.

Planning Issues:Ê Penny Blackwellâs report is attached.

Farmers Market:Ê Stuart Barker of Marioâs Sterling reported on the progress of the Farmers Market. The market is held in the restaurant parking lot every Saturday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. They are working on getting more variety in the types of vendors. The market is about 60% organic produce. He stated that August was a slow month, and the vendors are discouraged.

Stuart also reported that Marioâs is having trouble with their liquor license. The license has many restrictions left over from the previous ownerâs mistakes. The restaurant is closed at lunch now and bar business is slow, since the license restrictions prohibit them from promoting the bar. There will be a hearing on September 7 regarding the license.

Watermelon Festival,Ê sponsored by the Lions Club, Fri., Aug. 10-Sun., Aug. 12, noon-11 p.m.
